Understanding your symptoms: Diagnosis of ADHD in adults - Krakow

What are the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD symptoms)?
❌ Do you suffer from attention deficit disorder, especially when doing tasks that don't interest you? Do you quickly lose interest in a subject?
❌ Are you affected by behavioral disorders, causing others to perceive you as an anxious person?
❌ Do you often experience a strong need to move your arms and legs, i.e. you can't stand still, such as in a line?
❌ Do you rarely pay attention to detail or make mistakes due to inattention?
❌ Are you missing details or inadvertently doing an inaccurate job?
❌ Others say you are often thoughts somewhere else?
❌ Having trouble staying organized and meeting deadlines?
❌ Are you perpetually losing something and forgetting bills, phone calls, appointments?
❌ Do you feel like you are distracted by everything?
❌ Do you have tantrums because you can't wait your turn during a conversation?
❌ Are you interrupting other people's speech? Do you interrupt them at work and annoy them with your verbosity?
❌ Do you have mood swings and racing thoughts that make it difficult for you to focus on anything for longer?
If at least five of these statements sound familiar to you, it is very possible that you are one of the adults affected by Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD syndrome.
What is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurobiological disorder. Its causes can include genetic factors (gene mutations), anatomical factors (abnormalities in the structure and function of the central nervous system), atypical neurometabolism, neurodevelopmental disorders, and prenatal factors (complications during pregnancy and childbirth) and environmental factors.
Are worrisome symptoms indicative of ADHD?
Problems with concentration and organization, motor hyperactivity and the other behaviors mentioned above can indeed suggest ADHD.
They may or may not!
Similar symptoms also appear with other disorders, such as in situations of severe stress, so an examination by a psychiatrist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders will be key to correctly diagnosing your problem.
ADHD in adults and the gender of the patient
It is worth remembering that although ADHD has a significant impact on the quality of life for both men and women, the symptoms and consequences associated with the disorder are different for both sexes.
In men, symptoms are often more noticeable and related to outward behavior. They may exhibit greater impulsivity and a high need for physical activity. Their problems are noticeable as early as childhood, between the ages of 6-7. ADHD in adult men often results in problems with the law, substance abuse and a tendency to engage in risky behavior.
In women, ADHD symptoms are more likely to be more "internal" and thus less noticeable to those around them. Women are concerned with experiencing frequent feelings of anxiety and internal hyperactivity. They also have pronounced attention deficit disorder, problems with organization and time management, and low self-esteem. The noticeable symptoms of ADHD in women appear much later than in men, around the age of 12, so that they are often mistaken for symptoms of adolescence. In adult female patients, ADHD is often misdiagnosed as an anxiety disorder, personality disorder, depression or hormone-related mood disorder.
Both genders face feelings of shame and inadequacy, which is why the diagnostic interview is so important.
ADHD in adults versus the age of the patient
ADHD symptoms can evolve. An adult experiences less hyperactivity than a child, but will still struggle with an inability to focus attention and problems with organization. This is partly due to the maturity of the brain and partly due to strategies for adapting to the environment. Patients often describe that they "wear masks" to hide their symptoms and not expose themselves to criticism or rejection.
Adequate treatment of ADHD in adult patients clearly improves their quality of life.
How does the diagnosis of ADHD and the therapy process work?
✅ Diagnosis of ADHD is a multi-step process. It begins with a diagnostic interview, which consists of a series of psychological tests. Its results will confirm whether your symptoms meet the medical criteria for ADHD.
✅ A specialist - a psychologist or psychiatrist - will discuss with you your development during childhood and school age. He will question you about your treatment history and difficult experiences, but may also want to verify information from your certificates or school opinions. If you have such, bring them with you to your first meeting.
✅ After the interview, the specialist will determine the further plan of action, i.e. how the treatment will proceed, whether it will be necessary to start drug treatment, etc.
ADHD in adults, as in children, can be treated by reducing symptoms. Treatment uses behavioral methods (various forms of therapy) and drug treatment. Only a psychiatrist can select the appropriate medication.
